Growing up, cameras were always in the house. My Dad had an old movie camera with which he would avidly record all our important family events. My mum was also keen to capture everything from family gatherings, holidays, first days at school and birthdays on her camera. This had a strong influence on me. I remember taking her camera on school excursions and eagerly awaiting to see how the photos turned out.

In March 2000 I was in Chitwan National Park, Nepal, when my trusty instamatic camera froze and stopped working. I’d just spent a month and a half travelling around India and was about to start a month long adventure trekking in one of the most magical and scenic places in the world - the Himalayas.

So on the first day of arriving in Pokhara to begin the Annapurna Circuit trek, I found a camera shop and bought my first manual 35mm SLR, a Minolta Dynax 404si, which cost me £272.00 (an eye-watering amount for a young backpacker), and my passion for travel photography was really born.
